In Battlegrounds, you fight as part of a 4-person team in smaller 4v4v4 arenas. There are multiple game modes to play:
Team Deathmatch - Defeat enemy players to win.
Capture the Relic - Capture enemy relics and bring them back to your base to win.
Chaos Ball - Capture and hold the chaos ball to gain points. Holding the ball damages you and enemies can take the ball from you! The team to reach the score limit wins.
Domination - Capture and hold key locations on the map to win.
Crazy King - Capture and hold key locations on the map as they move around to win.
In each game type, you'll win by either reaching the point limit or by having the highest total by the end of the match! Similarly to the Alliance War, taking part in a Battlegrounds match will grant you Alliance Points and additional rewards.
In order to participate in Battlegrounds, you must first reach level 10. To access Battlegrounds, navigate to the Group & Activity Finder menu and select Battlegrounds. You can queue either as part of a group or queue individually. Once in the queue, the game type will be randomly determined unless a special pvp event weekend is running which states the game mode for the duration.

Ald Carac is designed to encourage players to engage in tight close combat, and the stone walls and buildings of the long-absent Dwarven race block line of sight and provide a lot of cover for surprise attacks or quick getaways.
The deeper you travel into the Dwarven ruins, the more cramped and claustrophobic the space becomes. As a result, the center of the Battleground is a hotspot for group fights. Circled by an elevated walkway, the center is vulnerable to players above, meaning those trying to control this space need to keep an eye above for attackers at all times. This elevated threat makes the center very hard to capture and hold.
The center of the map is not completely without advantage, however, as it is the only location that allows an unobstructed view into each team's base. In Ald Carac, visibility is at a premium, making controlling the center an important, but dangerous, strategic option. All Battlegrounds are 4v4v4 matches, so knowing exactly where your opponent is located is vital, regardless of the game type.
Ald Carac slowly opens up the further out from the center you go. The middle ring has more space, but it still features a fair amount of cover, including stairs up to the center overlook that grants vision into two bases. The outer ring finally provides mostly unobstructed views, so you can always travel around the outside of the map if your team wants to avoid surprises.
While Ald Carac is designed to be dense and claustrophobic, Foyada Quarry, with its wide-open spaces and limited cover, is the opposite. In this deserted granite quarry, you can view exactly where the action is right from the start. However, when navigating this map, you should watch your step; the entire site is now overflowing with lava, bathing the arena in a red glow and burning those unfortunate enough to fall in.
Despite the environmental hazards provided by the looming Red Mountain, Foyada Quarry funnels the action right into the center of the map via a selection of granite pathways and seared wooden bridges. Because the majority of the map is so open, teams are able to quickly close and engage with each other, thrusting you into battle almost immediately upon leaving your base and making it an especially fast-paced Battleground.
While the center of the map is a hotspot for team fights, the outside ring provides cover in the form of mining equipment, granite blocks, and forges. In addition, should the battle in the middle get too heated, you can always retreat to your base, which has limited pathways of attack and provides some of the only high ground in the map.
Set in an overgrown, abandoned temple to the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon, Ularra provides a varied arena with an emphasis on control of the high ground. Dominated by a large central shrine in the middle of the map, the center is an open space that can only be accessed by using one of the three teleporters set on platforms located between each base.
Surrounding the center is dense vegetation and long-fallen ruins, providing a fair amount of cover and line-of-sight breakers. If you want to avoid the center completely and travel without fear of being spotted or attacked from above, you can move underneath the central shrine free from prying eyes.
If you do reach the central platform, you are able to use each of its three terraces to survey a large portion of the map, giving visibility to the objectives and enemy bases that you don't have available while on the ground. More so than on any other map, Ularra provides a large central elevated area to fight over, but don't fall off! While some unique spots allow you to drop down safely, the plunge is sure to hurt if you're not careful.
The Arcane Univeristy is set in the crumbling ruins of Cyrodiil's once great institution of learning, long since decimated by the Soulburst and the Daedric occupation. The university, which stands in the shadow of the White-Gold Tower, is a challenging Battlegrounds location for both warrior academics and learned heroes alike.
When inside the university itself, you can use stairs to climb up to the building's middle level and a series of portals (similar to those found in Ularra) to teleport to the upper level. This will allow you to ambush the enemy teams below and move safely from one side of the map to the other. If you're clever, you can even find places on the upper level where you can utilize abilities like the Sorcerer's Bolt Escape to quickly travel from one side to the other, helping you elude enemy pursuit.
Be warned, however, as these useful portals also have a dangerous side-effect: they can turn you into a ticking time bomb!
Atop the mountains of Wrothgar, this Orc stronghold has been the center of countless conflicts over the centuries. Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout its violent history, the ruins now make for the perfect Battlegrounds arena for would-be champions.
When you fight in Mor Khazgur, the first thing you'll notice is the massive statue of Malacath in its center, but do not let the imposing figure of the Daedric Prince distract you – the arena's many stone and wooden bridges extend over perilously long drops. This means that if you're clumsy, the arena's ledges could result in a quick demise or, at least, a long run back up to the fight.
This treacherous location is made even more so thanks to a unique environmental threat: blinding white snowstorms that temporarily limit your visibility.
Deep underground, the subterranean arena known as Deeping Drome provides an entirely different kind of Battlegrounds experience. Illuminated by the glow of giant mushrooms, this cavernous location is perfect for those who enjoy Battlegrounds maps that encourage mobility.
Deeping Drome at first glance appears to be a large, open cavern, but once the match begins, you'll find that it's difficult to maintain sight on the enemy teams thanks to its hilly terrain and rocky features.
Situated on the border of Cyrodiil and Reaper’s March, Istirus Outpost was once a hotly contested Alliance War stronghold, but now, it is the location for a series of hard-fought Battlegrounds matches. This new map features a large arena at its center, and it is circled on one side by a ruined tower and the other a deep trench. Most notably, this Battleground is only semi-symmetrical, meaning the way each team navigates the map will be different, based on their spawn location. Istirus Outpost is also the first Battleground that allows players to mount
In Eld Angvar you and your team face off against your fellow players in the Ayleid world between worlds. You might recognize this location as one you visited during the Murkmire main questline, but this time, you’re using the void’s mysterious portals to hunt your fellow players. In addition to starting everyone in the middle of the map, Eld Angvar gives you more choices for how to navigate and experience the arena. Depending on the game type, different parts of the map are open or closed, with Capture the Relic, Domination, and Chaosball making use of one version, and Crazy King and Deathmatch making use of another.
